Flashlights and whistles: I have a long history with flashlights; ask anyone who knows me. I have a huge collection of flashlights. I have one in each room, each car. I have all sizes and all colors. Why? It’s the simplest concept ever. It lights the way and tells potential offenders to stay away. It’s a universal code for, “I am prepared”. And because I love flashlights so much, you can bet that I picked a perfect one for the Bag of Courage. It’s compact, has an LED light and comes with 2 AA batteries. And, it has an operating period of 6 hours and 45 minutes.
So my daughter says, “I have to carry another thing?”. Again, simple, just install the provided batteries and keep it in the Bag of Courage.
Why do I hate whistles? They are loud, ear-piercing, annoying, and attention grabbing. Not to mention, I have attended way too many volleyball tournaments.
Offenders hate them, too.
Emergency response teams love them. A whistle never runs out of power, it does not require technology and it’s light-weight. Clip it to your key chain or backpack and call it a day. When you need to, use it and help will be there for sure. If you want to have a little fun with this, try yelling as loud as you can and then blow the whistle, I guarantee, the whistle wins. (Most importantly, my daughter picked the purple.)
Be brave be prepared…keep a flashlight and whistle nearby. You never know when you or a friend will be in need of one of these handy personal safety tools.
