Sending my son to college, raising a teenage daughter and my natural inclination to be aware of my surrounding, I’ve been compelled to develop college safety tools and education for college bound students on how they can be empowered and prepared in protecting themselves from harm and managing themselves through an emergency. Knowing that my son and daughter have these emergency tools readily available definitely reduces my anxiety level…it just our inherent nature as parents to make sure these young adults are prepared.
There is courage in all of us, this bag of college safety tools is here for a little extra support.
Tools
Let’s face it, we all like to think that we will never be in harms way – but sometimes wishful thinking can only get us so far. Here’s how these tools can lift confidence if something were to ever happen. The Bag of Courage self defense and college safety tools include:
Pepper GEL
Not to be used on your steak, but for daily protection of yourself against two and four legged threats. Pepper gel is ideal for indoor and outdoor use. Spray directly into the attackers eyes and mouth and soon they’ll be choking and temporarily blind. This gives you a few seconds to escape a harmful situation. Police use this non-lethal weapon all over the country – strength and power given to you.
Money Sleeve / Emergency Numbers
Your phone or credit card might not always be there to save the day. Be prepared with some extra cash and the phone numbers you can’t seem to memorize. (We suggest parents provide at least twenty dollars in cash for the emergency sleeve.)
Flashlight
Use in times of darkness, like a power outage – but also to identify threats in low-light situations (ex: walking to a building, your car, hiking, etc.). Illuminating your way gives the impression that you are prepared and aware of your surroundings. Three elongated pulses can serve as a distress signal when in need of help. Still in danger, use as a weapon to strike in an attackers face.
Light Sticks
Not just for raves, these can be used to illuminate in all weather situations when your flashlight’s batteries have gone low. Crack the stick and use for a signal. 3-year shelf life, 12-hour illumination duration.
Multi-Tool
This is much more than a set of pliers. Use in survival emergencies to cut through materials (string, wood, plastic, and wire), open cans, loosen screws and nails, and as a weapon in self defense situations.
Emergency Whistle
This simple object creates a piercing sound that can save a life. Keep it in the bag or on your backpack to quickly grab when you need to draw attention in a troubling situation. The universal distress code is three equal blasts on the whistle. Repeat until you are heard.
Mini Sewing Kit
Includes thread, two buttons, a needle and safety pin. The perfect combination to patch up holes in your clothes, or mend an open wound or blister.
There’s More!
In addition to the seven quality tools listed above, the Bag of Courage includes a custom designed durable bag to store the tools and whatever else you want to add to this collection. This durable bag can be stored in your dorm room, backpack, car etc. It’s important that the Pepper Gel and/or Emergency Whistle are carried with you at all times. Be prepared for those unpredictable moments.
I just have a couple of more items to add…I’m including a four page College Safety Checklist and a couple of awesome stickers.
