My daughter, Natalie, has taught me that girls like bags of all sorts. She convinced me to design a high quality college student safety bag that she wouldn’t be embarrassed to keep nearby. It’s a tangible reminder of what it takes to be courageous. Being prepared is more than just reading tips and watching YouTube videos, it’s an intentional decision to want to take care of yourself and to take responsibility for your personal safety.
It’s second nature to carry your phone or take workout clothes to the gym, or a backpack to school or keys to your car, but, I’ve always wondered why carrying pepper spray seems like such a chore.
In talking to young women, I’ve learned about so many excuses; “it doesn’t look good”, “I’m just with friends”, “I never carry a purse”, “I wouldn’t know how to use it anyway”, “it’s big and ugly”, “where would I put it?”, “my friends will think it’s stupid”, “what will my date think?”
Blah, Blah, Blah….
So, it all comes down to vanity and what people think over the alarming statistic that one out of 5 of your friends will be assaulted. I’m asking young woman out there to go against the grain and just be smarter and braver and see how many will follow.
Here’s what makes this college student safety bag so special.
I’m going to start with the Pepper Gel. So, I went to a college orientation where one of the required seminars was on campus safety and sexual assault. Very informative! But guess what, they gave away a water bottle and encouraged students to sign up for their text alerts. Seriously?
I began my homework and researched many different schools and sororities and found that while campus safety and sexual assault are discussed, there was a need for more parent-student conversation and knowledge on how to prepare their students for safety and emergency situations… thus, the Bag of Courage was created with by my real-life experiences and observations. Just by starting this movement, I have opened up many doors to organizations, first responders, parents and victims that all want to be a part of educating young women.
So, where do I keep the college student safety bag?
I can’t say this enough…carry the Pepper Gel and emergency whistle with you at all times. Whether you connect it to your key chain, backpack or purse or all 3, depending on your outing, carrying Pepper Gel and the emergency whistle is the bravest thing you can do for yourself.
The bag, itself, is your tangible reminder to be courageous. Store your multi-tool, lighting devices and sewing kit in the bag along with any other items (first aid kit) you might add along the way. Keep the bag in your dorm, backpack or car.
